Dojo – Kun

Dojo-kun translates simply to dojo training hall rules, at Karate for Life we  seek to uphold each of the principals that our dojo-kun promotes. We believe that they form a guide for how we as students of Karate should conduct ourselves both inside and outside of the dojo.

The dojo-kun is a multi-layered document aimed at guiding a student to develop a deeper more intuitive understanding of its meaning as they continue their karate journey.

Overall, the dojo-kun calls for a demonstration of the respect that you feel for others and for the integrity of your marital arts training.  It asks you to examine the intentions and your actions.

It is hoped that this practice will encourage all students to take a second look at the dojo-kun with the view of gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of the advice it lays out and strive towards improving themselves along their continued karate journey.

The dojo-kun is much more than a decoration, it is the way. You will find a copy of the dojo-kun in both our training guide and syllabus.  It is just as important for a student to understand the meaning of the dojo-kun and how to execute the intentions that are laid out in their every day dealings as it is to understand the movements and techniques taught in class.
